Mental Health & Breast Cancer Awareness

As part of our ongoing mission to provide psychosocial support and holistic education, The Makazi Foundation launched a transformative initiative at Chigwaja Primary School, focused on mental health awareness for students and breast cancer education for the wider community. This project reflected our belief that emotional well-being and physical health are the cornerstones of sustainable development and empowerment.

About the project

Starting point

Recognizing the growing mental health challenges facing young people in Malawi, we delivered an interactive workshop on mental health tailored to the unique needs of primary school students.

The session included:

  • Engaging discussions on emotional well-being

  • Age-appropriate strategies for managing stress and anxiety

  • Activities that encouraged self-expression and peer support

Our goal was to ensure that each student walks away with the tools, confidence, and awareness to not only succeed academically but also flourish emotionally. By normalizing conversations around mental health from a young age, we aim to break stigma and lay a foundation for lifelong resilience.

Support from local communities

In collaboration with our partners at Breast Cancer Care Foundation Malawi, we also extended our efforts beyond the classroom. Together, we delivered comprehensive breast cancer education to both men and women in the Chigwaja community.

The session covered:

  • Early signs and symptoms of breast cancer

  • The importance of regular screenings

  • Dispelling common myths and fears

  • Encouraging men to be supportive allies in women’s health

This dual-focused approach helped us reach multiple generations with essential knowledge, reinforcing our vision for a healthier, more informed society.

The success of this initiative is a testament to what can be achieved when passion, collaboration, and purpose align. As we move forward, The Makazi Foundation is more dedicated than ever to expanding psychosocial support, improving community health literacy, and investing in the holistic growth of Malawi’s youth.

To every volunteer, partner, and supporter who made this possible; thank you. Your contribution is helping us build a future where no child is left behind, and every voice is heard.
