International Women’s Day

In commemoration of International Women’s Day, the Makazi Foundation hosted an interactive session with pregnant women at Maravi Health Center, placing a spotlight on the often-silenced issue of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). This engagement aimed to foster awareness, safety, and empowerment by equipping women with vital knowledge about their rights and protections under the law.

About the project

Bridging Gaps Through Legal Advocacy

Building on insights from a prior needs assessment conducted by the foundation, this session was tailored to the lived realities of women in the community. In partnership with the Women Lawyers Association of Malawi, the event offered a practical and accessible legal perspective on GBV, including how to recognize abuse, access legal aid, and navigate reporting mechanisms.

A Safe Space for Dialogue and Empowerment

More than just an information session, the event created a supportive space where women could share experiences, ask questions, and receive guidance without fear of judgment. The inclusion of legal professionals helped demystify Malawi’s laws surrounding GBV, especially as they relate to reproductive health, family dynamics, and intimate partner violence.

Continuing the Fight for Gender Justice

This session was a meaningful step in the Makazi Foundation’s ongoing mission to advocate for women’s rights, strengthen legal literacy, and build resilience through psychosocial and educational support. We remain committed to advancing safe and informed communities where every woman; pregnant or not, can live free from violence.
