Men's Mental Health Podcast

In commemoration of International Men’s Day, observed annually on November 19th, the Makazi Foundation once again partnered with Capital FM to produce a powerful podcast episode dedicated to men’s mental health.

The episode addressed the alarming rise in male suicide rates, with 246 out of 281 suicides recorded this year in Malawi involving men. This deeply concerning statistic highlights an urgent need for open dialogue, community support, and targeted mental health interventions for men.

About the project

Bringing Critical Voices to the Conversation

To explore the root causes behind these distressing trends, the Foundation invited influential voices from various sectors, including mental health professionals, advocates, and community leaders, all of whom are passionate about dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health. The discussion focused on:

  • Societal pressures and cultural norms affecting men’s emotional expression

  • The lack of accessible mental health resources for men

  • Suicide prevention strategies and early intervention

  • How families, institutions, and communities can provide better support

Support from local communities

The Makazi Foundation remains committed to promoting psychosocial well-being and mental health awareness, especially for groups often left out of these critical conversations. This podcast is part of the Foundation’s broader effort to normalize discussions around mental health, encourage help-seeking behavior, and foster a culture of empathy and support for men.
