Chigwaja Cyclone Freddy Relief
Cycline Freddy was both devastating and unexpected. Malawi suffered the most catastrophic consequences from Cyclone Freddy. Strong winds, mudslides, landslides and flashfloods hit 15 districts in the country's Southern region, leading to death of over 670 people, displacement and destruction. Over 2 million farmers have lost their crops and livestock, and over 179,000 hectares of crop fields have been destroyed.
About the project
Starting point
While some areas received extensive support, we identified an area that had not yet received any assistance. A couple of our members went to the Chigwaja area to find out what was needed. At the time of our initial visit, approximately twice30 families had lost their homes and only fried maize was available for food once or twce a day.
Support from local communities
Village Chiefs and Headmen have been extremely helpful in coordinating the availability of different community members. As of September 2023, we have visited Chigwaja twice; first donating to over 30 families and over 200 people in Chigwaja with food, buckets, blankets, clothes, and other essential items. On our next visit, we donated reusable pads to the young girls and women in need.
It was extremely heartwarming to receive a great amount of support from people willing to provide assistance. For this; we are truly grateful.
As we made our donation, we made an effort to structure organization within the camp to ensure that resources would be distributed as fairly as possible.
To everyone who responded to our call for help, from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you. Your donations have gone a long way in helping those in need.
